Sometimes people come to a place in their life’s journey where they feel confused, uncertain, and maybe even stuck. No matter how much they try, moving forward seems nearly impossible, and they realize that getting a little help is the wise thing to do. Daybreak has three counselors who are available to provide professional counseling to individuals, couples and families who are ready for some help. If you’re thinking about taking a step forward in personal or relational growth, one of our counselors may be just right for you.

Kurtz Cockley, M.A.


Kurtz Cockley has been a practicing therapist since 1996 and has significant experience in drug and alcohol counseling. Having been trained in play therapy, Kurtz has experience working with children, although he now focuses on working with couples on marital, pre-marital and parenting issues as well as people struggling with stress and anxiety issues.

Credentials: M.A. from Reformed Theological Seminary in Marriage and Family Therapy, and is licensed as such. Kurtz has been counseling at Daybreak since the fall of 2008.

Dr. James Johnson, L.C.S.W., D. Min.


Dr. James E. Johnson, Director of Shepherd’s Touch Counseling Ministry in Lancaster, has 40 years counseling experience and specializes in marriage and family therapy. Dr. Johnson particularly enjoys the work he does in addressing family-of-origin dynamics.

Credentials: Degrees in counseling and theology, is an ordained minister and a licensed and certified counselor and has authored three books: The Gift of a Sound Mind, Freedom from Depression, and Weaving the Family Tapestry. He’s been part of Daybreak’s Counseling Ministry from its beginning in 1999.

Jolene Ness, M.A.


Jolene has had extensive couseling experience that has included working with individuals, families, couples, children and adolescents.

Credentials: Jolene has an M.A. in Counseling with a concentration in Marriage and Family from Lancaster Bible College Graduate School. Her previous work experiences have included being the Executive Director of New Hope Ministries, a Mobile Therapist for Northwestern Human Services, the Director of Development for Camp Hebron, and a Therapist for HIS Creation Ministries.
